The New Patriotic Party(NPP) has described as bias and “politically motivated” the police invitation of its Northern regional chairman, Bugri Naabu, for aggressive comments and inciting violence.
The party’s Northern regional secretary, Sule Salifu Kasapa News the police took the move to satisfy the ruling NDC after it’s members mounted pressure on the security agency.
Mr. Bugri Naabu over the weekend at a rally revealed that armed civilians will guard ballot boxes for the NPP on elections day.
The comments drew outrage and condemnations by individuals and organizations.
The Inspector General of police subsequently instructed an investigations and police in the region have confirmed inviting the opposition executive.
But the regional scribe says the move is a “waste of time, insignificant and politically motivated”.
He says the police investigating the matter not because they independently believe the comments were wrong but out of mounted pressure by ” polical leadership “.
Mr. Salifu accused the police of witchhunting members of the opposition party and challenged them to arrest the Northern regional minister Mr. Abubakari Abdallah, and the NDC chairman Sofo Azorka, if they genuinely want to ensure peaceful elections.
The party last month blamed the two NDC executives for a wave of violence in Walewale and Tamale respectively.
” When Abuba (minister) organized men to break people legs at Walewale is he not moving around, when Azorka brought boys to attack our demonstration is he not there…we don’t consider what they are saying Bugri to be anything significant; it is immaterial to us at the moment.. Bugri is unique among Konkombas both in NDC and NPP in Ghana”
“Yes the police has invited him and we are not perturbed. We will go and tell them our side of the story so the IGP’s directive is a waste of time and we also see it as politically motivated just to divert our campaign”
He outlined the party’s disappointment with the police and suggested the party supports the comments made by the chairman.
” in fact, what Bugri deed the good people of this country have to thank him for saying that our supporters should not allow anybody to come to the polling stations to snatch ballot boxes, our supporters should not allow somebody to come and forment trouble there and that our supporters should be vigilant, what has he done? You think we have the election to lose?”, Mr. Sule angrily inquired.
