The Volta Regional Police command is proffering treason charges against members of the ‘separatist’ group who are campaigning for the secession of the Volta region as an independent State. ?
The police on Tuesday arrested three members of the Homeland study group foundation, after an event they held in Ho on Monday March 6, 2017.
?They include Charles Kormi Kudjordji age, 78, founder of the group, 57 year old Martin Asiama Agbenu, and Divine Odonkor 65 years.
The Homeland Study group Foundation has in last one year been campaigning for the separation of the Volta region and parts of Northern and Upper East region to form the Western Togoland state, which they claim existed before independence in 1957.
Speaking to Ghone news’ Lambert Atsivor, the Volta Regional Police Commander, ACP Nana Asomah Hinneth said they were arrested for distributing T-shirts with inscriptions of declaring independence for the Volta region on May 9, 2017.
According to him, the suspects upon interrogation confirmed their intentions of declaring Volta Region Independence on the May 9, 2017 with the name, Western Togoland.
This, he said was against the laws of Ghana hence the possible charge of treason against the three men who have been arraigned before court on Thursday.
ACP Asomah Hinneh also confirmed that, the 78 year old founder of the group, was granted bail because of his age, while the others are still in police custody.
