A 29-year old constable, Atibiya Ayine, has been shot dead by unknown assailants on the Spintex Road.
Reasons for the attack are unclear as investigations have commenced into the accident. The policeman is said to have been on guard duties at the premises of Poly Tank Ghana Limited at dawn, with about ten other private security personnel also on duty.
The gunmen made away with the constable’s AK 47 rifle. One of the private security guards was also stabbed, and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Accra.
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Effia Tenge, told Citi News the police are currently on a manhunt for the suspected assailants.
“Some armed unidentified men attacked and killed a police constable at his duty point on the Spintex road.
They made away with his AK 47 rifle and the police have begun investigations into the matter”, she said. She called on the public to volunteer information on the suspects that could lead to their arrest.
“What the police will require of the public now is for the public to help us by way of volunteering credible information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
They are a threat to the society once they possess an AK47. We are doing everything humanly possible to get the perpetrators of this crime” she said.
