Pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has said one of the features that will be a legacy of the immediate past Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor is his sepervision of police brutalities against demonstrators in 2015.
According to the group, the former IGP’s failure to control his men from assauting harmless law abiding Ghanaians exercising their rights to demonstrate at a time he was the Director General of Operations, constitutes a blight on his career as a senior police officer.
The Convenor of Let My Vote Count Alliance, David Asante made the comment following the retirement of IGP John Kudalor on Wednesday January 25, 2017.
Riot control police on 16th of September 2015, mercilessly beat some of the demonstrators with horse whips for allegedly using unapproved routes in their march to demand a new electoral roll.
A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko was beaten with baton and horse whips while hot water was sprayed on them. A young man also lost one eye after he was shot at by the police.
The police further fired tear gas into the thick crowd in order to cow them into submission.
The police suspected the protesters were trying to deviate from the planned route and where heading to the Electoral Commission.
About 20 protesters, including the convener David Asante, were subsequently arrested as the situation turned chaotic. The police action was roundly condemned by human rights activists and organizations.
Then President Mahama asked for an investigation to be conducted into the unfortunate incident, but over a year after, the finding of the committee is yet to be published.
Speaking to Kasapa News on Thursday, David Asante called for the Committee report on the police brutalities to be made public.
“Mr Kudalor, we are asking you, whether you included the report in your handing over notes? we’re interested, we want to know the content. We welcome the new IGP, David Asante Apeatu, Ghanaians are waiting to see whther he’ll protect them or he’ll leave us to be harmed as Kudalor did.”
