The maiden edition of the PIPIRO Table Tennis Tournament has ended in Adabraka, Accra, with hundreds of table tennis supporters and enthusiasts in attendance.
The tournament, the first of its kind, was part of a set of activities. It was organised on the theme: “Operation exhibit your skills.”
It was launched by PIPIRO Concept, an organisation that seeks to empower the youth through sports and educational activities.
Nigerian ping pong player, Favour Ayobami, beat Joshua Okine 3-1 in the final to win the maiden edition of the PIPIRO Table Tennis tournament held at Adabraka in Accra last Saturday.
Emmanuel Asante defeated ace spinner, Lord Fiifi, 3-0 in the third and fourth place match to place third in the one-day tournament.
Ayobami was rewarded with GHC500 cash prize and a trophy; Okine received GHC300 and a trophy; Asante got GHC200 and a trophy, while Fiifi took home GHC100.
The competition witnessed 87 players including two females from Ghana, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire and Nigerian involved in the all-play-all format of batting, smashing and spinning.
The brain child of the event, Mr. Divine Nkrumah, indicated that the tournament was aimed at whipping up enthusiasm in the game in communities and localities.
Mr. Nkrumah was overwhelmed with the outcome of the event.
“I want to first thank God for a successful event. I also want to thank team members for helping with the organisation of this tournament, and to all who gathered here either to participate in the competition or observe,” he expressed.
The passion and skills demonstrated, according to the organisers, was a wake-up call that much can be done in this particular field in order not to waste talents.”
He further called on government, state agencies and the private sector to support and invest in the table-tennis industry.
He stated that the competition will be replicated in other parts of the country.
