Chief of Assin Gangan in the Assin North municipality of the Central Region, Nana Kwabena Ayeh, received the rudest shock of his life when foodstuff and some sporting items he donated to the Gangan M/A Basic School were rejected by parents of pupils in the school.
The parents minced no words as they told the chief in the face that they did not want anything from him.
The surprised chief had no option but to succumb to their “rude behaviour” and took his items including rice, oil, tin tomatoes and footballs among other things away.
Narrating the incident to Weekend Today in a telephone interview on Wednesday, chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school, Mr. Abban, stated that the chief has litigation issues with almost everyone in the community, hence their rejection of his donation.
“If he is not on good terms with the parents, why would he buy foodstuff to be cooked for their wards?” he quizzed.
According to him, the chief did not consult the PTA or management of the school before undertaking that gesture hence their attitude towards him.
“The parents themselves consulted me as the PTA chairman that they do not want the foodstuff from the chief to be cooked for their wards since they are not on good terms with him so I also consulted the head of the school who heeded to the concerns of the parents,” he further narrated.
Reacting to the development, the chief said he was saddened and surprised at the attitude of the parents, saying they should have rather advised their wards to refrain from enjoying his donation when the school gives them out to them instead of taking that action.
He revealed that it was the school authorities who appealed to him for his assistance since the school will be holding their sporting activities and had no sponsors.
“I have been doing this for the past two years so I decided to give them these food items to be cooked for the children,” he explained.
“This will not stop me from helping anyone who needs help in this community. I will continue to do it because whether they like it or not I am still the chief of this community and it is my responsibility to see to the welfare of my people,” he added.
He accused the Assemblyman of the area, Mr. Francis Ativi, of being the brain behind the parents’ attitude.
However, when Weekend Today reached Mr. Ativi, he denied the claim, saying he only helped them when they approached him to assist them get their concerns resolved.
