Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asunafo South constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region, Derrick Nii Lokko has revealed that over 250 guns are in the possession of both supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) with the intention of causing chaos in the run up to and during the December 7 polls.
According to him, residents of Asunafo South are currently living in fear due to the recent clashes.
“Over 250 guns are currently in the possession of both NDC and NPP supporters.
Most of the people in the area are having sophisticated ammunitions such as pump action guns in their custody” Nii Lokko told host of Adom FM’s current affairs programme “Burning Issues” while speaking on the recent happenings in the constituencies.
The residents’ fears follow recent violent clashes between some supporters of NDC and NPP after the office of the NPP in the area was invaded by men believed to be supporters of the governing NDC.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was forced to suspend the voter transfer exercise at Kukuom following the clashes which led to an official sustaining cutlass wounds. The Asunafo South EC office was also ransacked by the unidentified men.
The situation has been brought under control by the security agencies in the area but the political parties, traditional authorities and residents are not completely convinced about their safety and are apparently arming themselves.
The Kukuom Traditional Council in the Brong Ahafo Region also gave government a 72-hour ultimatum to deploy military men to the town or it will advise residents to arm themselves because they have lost confidence in the Police in the area but the Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor has assured the residents of their safety.
Meanwhile, the NPP chairman for Asunafo South, Elvis Mensah said both parties are ready to smoke the peace pipe.
“We as a political party want peace ahead of the elections to protect lives and properties” he said.
Elvis Mensah added that the presence of heavy military and police will ensure peace in the area.
He also called on the chiefs in the area to intervene to ensure peace in the area as the security agencies work hard to maintain law and order.
