The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has finally broken its silence over the cause of yesterday’s fire at the Ashaiman Timber market that injured several persons and burnt about 12 fuel tanker vehicles.
Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Billy Anaglate said theft is believed to have sparked the explosion which wrecked havoc to property but denied the fact that more 8 persons died as a result of the incident.
According to him, some miscreants tried to siphon fuel from one of the tanker vehicles which was exposed to some high temperature triggering the fire
He admitted a number of injuries were recorded but said the only death recorded is a goat which was burnt beyond recognition
We had 12 tankers out of which nine were totally burnt and three partially burnt. They had 25 tankers parked in this yard but 12 of them were those that got burnt… the place is a yard in which tankers normally park and this yard people were siphoning fuel and the siphoning is what caused the actual fire.
There have never been any injury; there have never been any death. The only thing that got burnt was a goat,” he stated
