The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has inaugurated the 17th Millennium City Schools in Korle- Gonno, a suburb of Accra.
The aim of the project is to eradicate the shift-system among public schools within the capital city.
The three storey, 18-unit classroom block has offices for teachers, washrooms, library, computer and science laboratories. The building is disability-friendly, and has a generator set aimed at providing power in cases of power outages.
The school further aims to make teaching and learning attractive for its pupils.
Commissioning the edifice, the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Okoe Vanderpuije, said as part of the Assembly’s efforts to turn Accra into a Millennium City, it has embarked on the construction of the Millennium City Schools, to create an environment for quality education.
He also noted that it was the policy of the government to invest more in the education of children, making them productive citizens.
Dr Okoe Vanderpuije, who is also contesting as the parliamentary candidate of the governing National Democratic Congress for Ablekuman South, averred that the government, through the AMA, will provide infrastructure, as well as learning and teaching materials to ensure quality teaching towards the development of the nation.
He emphasised that the quality teaching to children will breed effective and efficient professionals for the future of Ghana.
Dr. Okoe Vanderpuije appealed to teachers to ensure that children use the facilities established in the school, since that will broaden their knowledge and expose them to modern ways of learning, for them to be able to compete with others across the globe.
He mentioned the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools, Achimota Secondary School girls’ dormitory & 2 No head teachers’ bungalow and Accra New Town Experimental School have been completed and will soon be commissioned.
Dr. Okoe Vanderpuije charged management and teachers of the Korle-Gonno Cluster of Schools to endeavour to better their education performance within the Metropolis.
The Member of Parliament of Ablekuma South, Mr. Fritz Baffour, commended the Mayor of Accra for his vision in eradicating the shift system in the Metropolis.
He asked parents to pay attention to their children’s welfare by encouraging them to study.
Mr. Baffour reiterated the government’s commitment to better the socio-economic conditions of Ghanaians.
