Police officers stationed at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Thursday morning, arrested a commercial motorbike rider, also known as “okada”, after they found a loaded hand gun on him.
Eyewitnesses said it took four officers to restrain the rider before disarming him and whisking him away.
“The man was very strong. The four police officers were not even able to take the gun away from him. It was after one of them hit him with the rifle that they were able to unarm him,” one eyewitness said to Citi News’ Philip Nii Lartey who was at the scene.
“The police were arresting the “okada” riders and demanding their keys, so they stopped this man; and asked him for his keys but he refused. The police tried forcefully to take the keys away from him when he noticed the gun,” the eyewitness revealed.
It is unclear why the rider was carrying a loaded gun.
The police were on an exercise arresting the commercial motorbike riders (okada riders), since the business is an illegality, but has been allowed to expand ove time.
Despite efforts by the police to clamp down on the Okada businesses, it is evidenent that the comerical motorbike operators, are not ready to go out of business.
