A new wave of crime has emerged in the Obuasi township of the Ashanti Region, Weekend Today can report.
Occultism, which is gradually gaining roots in the mining city, our investigations showed, has created fear and panic among residents of the town.
Three different cult groups, Weekend Today gathered, have emerged in some Moslem communities in the area including Gawusu, Koofekrom and Tutuka.
The members of these cults are alleged to have fortified themselves with ‘juju’ against gunshots and machete wounds.
In an interview with Weekend Today some residents of the above-mentioned communities expressed worry about the activities of these cult groups.
“They (cult group) attack innocent people and collect their belongings, while as a result of their brutalities shop owners within these vicinities are also forced to close by 6:00 p.m., every day for fear of their lives,” the residents lamented.
According to them, the past weeks in these areas had been hell as they have witnessed series of attacks on innocent people.
“When they enter your shop, they will take what they want and destroy everything, and if you are not lucky, they will butcher you,” a seamstress at Obuasi Market, who gave her name as Sister Babara, lamented.
Meanwhile the Obuasi District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jonas Kofi Agbevem, who confirmed activities of these cult groups to Weekend Today said they were in full control of the situation.
The police commander disclosed that they have arrested seven of them.
He said as part of their strategies, they [police] have declared 36 of the cult members wanted.
To this end, the police commander assured residents of the said areas of peace, and urged them to go about their normal duties without fear.
“My men, [police officers] will go after them wherever they are and ensure that those behind these heinous crimes are made to face the full rigours of the law to serve as deterrent to others,” DSP Agbevem, reassured.
