The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has lauded government for increasing the monthly allowance of National Service personnel from GHC350 to GHC559.
NUGS President, Julian Cobbinah in a statement issued Wednesday said the gesture would energise graduates to take the exercise seriously.
“As partners in mooting the idea of the National Service Scheme, NUGS is gratified to note that such an upward adjustment will only serve to incentivize the over 70,000 personnel who are serving our country selflessly in all sectors of our national life,” the statement read.
Finance Ministry on Tuesday gave its approval for the request of the National Service Secretariat (NSS) to readjust the monthly allowance of personnel.
The amount went up by 40 percent.
This means that starting January 1, the over 70, 407 service personnel across the country would be receiving the new amount.
Political pundits have described the decision as being in bad faith since the current government has some few days to handover to the incoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
But NUGS said the approval of the new amount has demonstrated the commitment of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the welfare of Ghanaian youth.
“The increment essentially will promote and ignite the spirit of service and volunteerism,” the statement continued entreating NSS officials to eliminate all forms of bottleneck in the administration of the Secretariat.

The National Union of Ghana Students wishes to commend the governme nt of Ghana for increasing the allowances of Service persons from 350gh to 559gh representing over 60% increment.
As partners in mooting the idea of the National Service Scheme, NUGS is gratified to note that such an upward adjustment will only serve to incentivize the over 70,000 personnel who are serving our country selflessly in a ll sectors of our national life and across the length and breadth of our country.
The increment essentially will promote and ignite the spirit of service and volunteerism as this indicates government willingness to help youth committed to serving our nation meets their daily expenditure and alleviat e their hardships.
We are by this statement also drawing the attention of the National Service Scheme to work to reduce all bottlenecks concerning payment of allowances to personnel in order that Service persons are able to access their all owances timely and comfortably.
We are looking forward to even better incentives and arrangements which will improve the living standards of graduates at least for the first year aft er they have passed out from our tertiary institutions.
