Western Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) has commenced the vetting of candidates shortlisted for the position of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) in the districts of the region.
In an interview with Amansan Television (ATV), Western Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa, said there was the need to ensure transparency in the vetting.
He explained that directives were given by the national executives of the party to select three candidates from each district but there were lots of petitions against the shortlisted candidates.
According to him, a decision was taken by the national executives of the NPP to open up nominations for potential candidates.
He said 73 candidates brought their applications but only three of them were shortlisted for vetting.
He also explained that the vetting would involve the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and National Security to help do background checks on the candidates.
Mr. Afrifa advised candidates not to raise their aspirations high “because it’s the power and prerogative of the president to appoint DCEs and for that reason candidates should accept every outcome in the spirit of unity and for the betterment of Ghana and for their districts.
