More than 200 members believed to be members of a vigilante group affiliated with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Delta Force, on Friday, March 24, 2017 stormed the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to carry out a threat they issued to the president a fortnight ago.
Delta Force, which is the Ashanti regional version of the NPP’s Invincible Force,’ went there to demand the removal of the Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei.
It would be recalled that the vigilante group early this month petitioned the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, over the appointment of Mr. George Agyei as the Regional Security head.
The heavily-built men who were visible at every NPP programme before and during the 2016 election in the region swore never to work with the president’s appointee whom they said was nowhere to be found during their struggles in opposition.
And living by their threat, the rowdy group on that Friday forenoon went to the RCC, and physically sacked the president’s appointee from his office.
Even though there was police presence when the group arrived, the huge number of the ‘macho men,’ coupled with the fact that their party is in power, prevented the initial few policemen on duty from taking any action but to watch them vandalise the office.
Amid lots of war chants, the Delta Force members, according to eye witnesses, went straight to the security coordinator’s office and allegedly manhandled him, before some policemen were sent in from the Regional Police Command to escort him in their car to a safe place.
Not only did they sack him from his office, they also vandalised several items in the office including furniture and louvre blades.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested the leader of Delta Force who allegedly attacked the Ashanti regional security liaison officer in his office on Friday.
The 37-year-old mechanic, Kwadwo Bamba, is currently in police custody helping with investigations into the attack, a police statement said.
The statement also noted that names of other members of the vigilante group are known to the police and were being sought after.
