Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Portuphy has been rebuked by stakeholders for what has been described as an endorsement of post-election violence. Mr. Portuphy on Thursday, had charged NDC supporters to defend themselves if they are attacked by rampaging supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Following President-elect Nana Addo’s win in the 2016 elections, there were reports and cases of unprovoked attacks on NDC members by supporters of the NPP. There were reports that people in the likes of popular Comedian Wofa K, Musician Mzbel, and some Ministers of state, were attacked by the NPP youth.
Though the police had taken control of the situation, the NDC chairman went ahead to ask party supporters to defend themselves while seeking police protection. According to him, they should not fold their hands for the NPP to butcher them to death. Some leaders of the NPP however, have frowned at the statements made by Portuphy.
Controversial MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, has rebuked the NDC chairman for his comments. Though the MP condemned the attacks said to have been perpetrated by NPP supporters on their NDC counterparts, he didn’t hesitate to chastise Portuphy for encouraging violence.

NPP’s Agyapong who spoke to Joy News, has also revealed that one of his boys was among the vigilante group who took over the Toll Booth at the Tema end of the Motorway on Monday. The MP said he had rebuked his boy and warned him never to take laws into his hands.
Also reacting to Portuphy’s comments, National Youth Organizer of the NPP Sammy Awuku, has described the move by the NDC chairman as unfortunate. Sammy Awuku speaking to the media said the NDC chairman ought to have encouraged party supporters to remain calm since the Police was already making frantic efforts to bring the issue under control.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that some of the attacks, particularly the one on Wofa K, was a hoax to court public sympathy.
