The District Chief Executive for Akatsi North in the Volta region, James Gunu, has punched holes in the opposition New Patriotic Party’s promise of giving each of the 275 constituencies, one million dollars a year, to facilitate development if they win power.
According to him, the promise was nothing but a hoax intended to hoodwink Ghanaians into voting for the NPP.
The NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a recent campaign tour of the Northern region, revealed the party’s intention to cede a million dollars from the annual budget to fund infrastructure development in each constituency.
This promise, in addition to the flagbearer’s promise to build a factory in each district and also provide a dam for each village in the north, has generated comments from both sides of the political divide, with the governing NDC describing them as mere political rhetoric.
Commenting on the issue, the Akatsi North DCE said the NPP lacks the credibility to implement such promises because they couldn’t even provide seed money to newly created district assemblies during their tenure in government.
“The NPP created some districts in their time, they couldn’t give the districts seed money, but when the NDC created districts including my district, we were given seed money of GH¢1 million Ghana, that helped the district to take off.”
“So if today they (NPP) are promising that they will give every constituency $1 million, it is not true. They couldn’t do it when they had the opportunity and they can’t do it now,” Mr. Gunu told journalists on the sidelines of a ceremony to present educational materials to schools in his area.
He therefore appealed to electorates to retain President Mahama by voting massively for the NDC in the December 7, polls to continue with the infrastructural development and social intervention programmes started across the country.
