The John Mahama 2016 Campaign has descended heavily on Accra-based Joy FM and Citi FM over the “unprovoked attack” by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters on their counterparts in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), calling the two radio stations NPP’s media partners.
According to a statement signed by Spokesperson Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the NPP and “their media partners” twisted Sunday’s incident.
“The rush to issue statements, and together with their media partners circulate a false claim that supporters of the NDC wanted to attack the residence of the NPP flagbearer is clearly a failed attempt to hoodwink the public and the international community after photographs of their gun-wielding thugs appeared on both social and new media platforms,” the statement said.
The initial reports confirmed the firing of gunshots at the Nima residence of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo but it is unclear which party’s supporters cranked that up.
The blame game has been on.
But what is clear is that the NDC supporters were on a health walk that morning and passed Al-Waleed Bin-Talal Highway, on which Nana Akufo-Addo’s residence is located.
“No NDC supporter and participant in Sunday’s health walk wanted to enter let alone attack the Nima residence. It is also instructive to state that the police had cordoned off the property.”
The John Mahama camp believed the turn-out for the walk just confirmed how popular the president is, making him the People’s Choice “and will win the 2016 Presidential Elections convincingly”.
Separately, the NPP condemned the attacks on Sunday, calling on President Mahama to equally condemn it.
The party said the attack was “premeditated”.
“Amassing NDC supporters outside of the NPP Flagbearer’s house and in an attempt to enter the house is all part of a broad range of calculated, violent, and provocative acts designed to bait the NPP into responding in similar fashion.”
