Mahama has implied that the NPP is anti-northerners, and will never allow any of her members who is a northerner to progress in his political ambition.
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed pity for members and supporters of the major opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who are from the North. His statements came during an address of the party supporters at a rally in the Upper West Region. In his speech, Mahama implied that the NPP is anti-northerners and will never allow any of her members who is a northerner to progress in his political ambition.

Making particular reference to Dr Mahammudu Bawumia, the NPP Vice Presidential candidate, Mahama stated categorically that the party will never allow him to contest for the Presidency if he ever expires for the position in future. He expressed concern for any northerner who is giving his energy to the business of the NPP. According to him, the person will be used, only to be dumped by the party.
Speaking further, the President recounted how the NDC supported him in his presidential race in 2012 following the death of President Attah Mills. He then pointed out that he is very proud of the ruling party because they do not respect ethnic or religious affiliations, but opens opportunities for all people.
These are some of the very words of the President:
Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our northern brothers running and also doing this. They will use you and dump you. I want to live to see the day; you let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for president in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you.
When the misfortune hit us, and our father Prof. Mills passed away, the constitution said that the Vice President should take over and I did, by then we were close to an election. If it was another party, they would have insisted there should be a congress and in that congress I would have been contested and they would have given the leadership to somebody else…
I am proud to be a member of the NDC because I know it is a party that opens opportunities for all people of Ghana irrespective of your ethnic affiliation or you religious affiliation.
