MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army (SNA), backed by troops from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), on Tuesday captured Mir-tugo village in the central Somali region of Middle Shabelle from Al-Shabaab militants.

UNITED NATIONS — The UN Security Council on Tuesday extended the mandate of UN peacekeeping force in Abyei, a contested region bordering Sudan and South Sudan, until May 15, 2017.
In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-nation council also underscored that the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) shall take necessary actions to protect civilians under threat of physical violence. (UN-Abyei-Peacekeeping)
DAMASCUS — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in his interview published on Tuesday that his administration is still skeptic about the ability of the U. S. president-elect, Donald Trump, to fulfill his previous promises on the need to fight terrorism in cooperation with Russia.
In an interview with Portugal’s RTP national TV, Assad said he is being extremely cautious about judging Trump’s stance, “particularly that he hasn’t occupied any political position before, and thus we cannot say anything about what is he going to do.” (Syria-Trump)
WELLINGTON — Navy vessels from several countries were anchoring off a quake-stricken New Zealand township Wednesday as the evacuation of stranded tourists and residents stepped up.
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) evacuated around 200 people from the tourist town of Kaikoura Tuesday and helicopter evacuations would resume early Wednesday, with inward flights bringing in supplies, Civil Defence emergency management director Sarah Stuart-Black said Wednesday.
