Social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook, are awashed with results which either claim victory for various candidates or put them in the lead in the elections which ended across the country eight hours ago.
Provisional results by some media houses from a little over 100 out of the over 28,000 polling stations across the country have put Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party in the lead with about 52 per cent.
The campaign team of President John Mahama has meanwhile claimed in a statement issued few minutes ago that per their parallel vote tabulation, President Mahama who is seeking a second term “is in a comfortable lead” and urged party supporters to remain calm.
But the Commission has issued a statement on its official page to reject those results, saying “No official results have been released yet. Results being called on social media are not official EC results.”
The Commission explained that the results of the parliamentary election will be tallied and agreed to by all parties and “on confirmation, the returning officer will declare the winning parliamentary candidates.
It, however, said results of the presidential election are being collated at various Constituency Collation Centre centres for further transmission to the National Collation Centre at the EC headquarters.
“Upon validation by all parties, the final result will be declared. The returning officer, Mrs Charlotte Osei, will declare the final result,” it reiterated.
