Four more African nations will participate in the FIFA world cup in 2026 if the proposal by the Bureau of the body’s Council is approved in May.
At its meeting on Thursday, the Bureau accepted FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s campaign promise of seeing the world cup expanded to 48 teams.
By the new rebalancing, Africa will have nine nations participating in the mundial.
The continent will be second to Europe as regards the number of participation teams.
The Old continent will have three more participating, taking its slot from 13 to 16.
South and North America will have six nations each while Asia fields eight nations.
The Oceanian region will no longer engage in a play-off as it gets one slot.
There will, however, be a six-nation play-off to decide the last two nations to join the qualified nations.
