Three more persons have finally surmounted the Electoral Commission’s watertight qualification hurdle, as they get the nod to contest the 2016 presidential election on December 7.
Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of Progressive People’s Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Congress and Dr. Edward Mahama of the Convention People’s Party add up to seven (7)the number of presidential candidates going into the December polls.
This did not come easily without a hard fought legal wrangling capped with a Supreme Court order.
The three were among 12 others who were disqualified by the Electoral Commission for committing various errors and criminal offences while filling their nomination forms.
But in a Supreme Court ruling on November 7, 2016, the EC was ordered to extend the nomination period by two days: November 7 and 8. This, the court, said would afford persons disqualified the opportunity to rectify errors on their forms which led to their disqualification.
Eleven out of the 12 disqualified aspirants managed to submit the corrected forms to the EC by close of nomination 5pm Tuesday.
However, Chairperson of Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei today announced that only 3 of them met the requirements to sail through after the “Commission evaluated and vetted” the submitted forms.
Already, President John Dramani Mahama of National Democratic Congress, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party, and independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah were cleared to contest by the EC on October 10.
Having finalised the number of candidates in the race to Flagstaff House, the Electoral Commission is therefore expected to do the balloting for the candidates.
