Alhaji Samson Kwakwa, a member of the National Campaign Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has put up three zongo campaign teams to champion the re-election of President John Dramani Mahama.
Alhaji Kwakwa who represents the Zongos on the NDC National Campaign team nationwide is also campaigning on the team of the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.
The three teams which are currently campaigning in three Regions are led by Alhaji Aremeyaw Cool Younger, Zongo Caucus National Coordinator in the Western Region, Alhaji Ahmed Bentem, Deputy National Coordinator in the Ashanti Region and Alhaji Abdulai Yakubu, Zongo Caucus National Communications Officer in the Volta Region.
The Western Regional team visited Takoradi, Elubo, Axim and its surrounding zongo communities, while the Ashanti team toured the Zongos within Kumasi and the Volta team tour Ho, Hohoe, Kpando, Sogakope, Aflao, Kejebi, Akatsi and Adidome.
The teams on their tours meet with the people in zongo communities including chiefs, Imams, opinion leaders and traditional authorities on the need to re-elect President Mahama and NDC parliamentary candidates in the various constituencies.
Alhaji Younger said there was the need to intensify the door to door campaign to win more votes for the NDC which would confirm the re-election of President Mahama.
He recounted the achievements of President Mahama and his love for people living in zongos.
He said President Mahama would every year offer full scholarship to 80 female Muslims to study Medicine in Cuba to avert the uncomfortability of Christian male doctors treating female Muslims.
This he said had never happen in the history of any Government in the country and that the commitment towards the development of Muslims and Zongo communities was imbedded in the heart of President Mahama.
Alhaji Bentem said the NDC target to win 13 parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region would be manifested through the massive turnout in zongo communities on December 7.
He said it was important that people in zongos came out early in their numbers to cast their votes.
He said the NDC and President Mahama had the Region at heart, and Kumasi, the regional capital had benefited more from the major projects that Government had initiated.
This he said include the reconstruction of the Kejetia Market to a modern facility, the revamping of Kumasi Shoe factory, the construction of the Community Day Senior High Schools in most parts of the Region.
Alhaji Bentem said the promises made by President Mahama during his first term campaign has been fulfilled and that the promises includes the completion of the first phase of the Tamale International Airport and the lifting of the Pilgrims from the Northern Zone at the airport direct to The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the construction of the Community Day Senior High Schools.
‘The projects also include the expansion of the Tema and Takoradi harbours, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Kasoa interchanges, the Eastern Corridor Roads, Regional and District hospitals and the construction of Ho, upgrading of Kumasi and expansion of Kotoka International airports.’
This he said indicates the President’s commitment and determination to deliver again in initiating more developmental projects on his second term if he is re-elected to continue.
Alhaji Yakubu in his address reminded the chiefs and Imams of the introduction of the Eidul-Fitr and Eidul-Adha Muslims holidays by the NDC under the former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Alhaji Yakubu said President Mahama Government had shown much love to the people living in zongo communities by providing them potable water, roads, school building, health facilities and infrastructure development.
He said there was the need to seek blessings for President Mahama and reciprocate the love shown by massively voting for him to continue his second term.
The campaign teams presented branded NDC T-shirts, veils, scarfs and other paraphernalia to the communities to warn for people to felt the presence of the party in their communities.
The Chiefs and Imams said the zongo communities and Muslims chiefs recognised and appreciated the efforts of President Mahama towards development.
They pledged their support for President Mahama and urged him to maintain the peace the country was enjoying before, during and after the elections.
