About 300 people were on Tuesday paraded at a ceremony in Kumasi as aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Led by four former elected assembly members in various districts in the Ashanti region, the defectors said they held various positions in the NPP in various constituencies in the region.
They included Osei Sarfo Kantanka, a former Assembly member for Ohwimase in Kumasi, a former polling station chairman for Atwima Takyiman M/A Primary; Eric Assibey who used to be Assembly Member for
Kwadaso North and former Kwadaso constituency NPP Chairman aspirant; Comfort Ahenkorah, a former Assembly Member for Manhyia and NPP women activist and Henry Osei Akoto, a former Assembly Member for Bomso and a former NPP Bomso Ward coordinator.
Addressing the media, Osei Safo Kantanka, said their decision to defect to the NDC together with their followers was informed by the leadership paralysis that had hit the NPP under the stewardship of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said Nana Akufo-Addo was not capable of winning elections for the NPP as compared to President John Mahama who was a unifier, respectful and an exceptional leader who had offered opportunities for young people to help bring the best out of them
He stated that coupled with those qualities of President Mahama was the “unprecedented” infrastructure development which had brought employment and relief to people in various corners of the country.
The Former Ashanti Regional Minister and current NDC Parliamentary candidate for Nhyiaeso, Mr Samuel Sarpong welcomed the defectors and urged them to feel at home because the NDC does not discriminate.
The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the NDC, Mr Samed Akalilu, noted that the defectors would be treated as though they were members of the party at its birth.
He stated that the defection was a testimony of the sterling job executed by President Mahama and that the party would exceed its one million votes target.
