Four persons were severely injured in an attack on the parliamentary candidate of the Progressive People’s Party for the Salaga North constituency, Abdul Fatawu Wahab on Saturday night.
Confirming the incident to Adom News, the candidate said they were returning from a mini rally at Gbun when a group suspected to be NDC supporters attacked them with offensive weapons.
Eight members who were in the party vehicle including the candidate were beaten with stones, sticks and sand until they were saved by some elders of the community.
Four persons including the constituency organizer reportedly suffered head injuries. He is said to be in stable condition.
The Gbun community is the village of the incumbent Member of Parliament and NDC parliamentary candidate Adam Mumuni but a strong hold of the PPP.
Abdul Fataw said the MP had accused him of inciting ‘his people against him’ and warned him to stop complaining in the small village.
Reason for the Saturday night attack is still undetermined but the PPP parliamentary nominee is blaming the NDC MP for the violence.
“We were campaigning, and all of a sudden a group of people came from different locations and started beating my members including myself because they started throwing stones at me but I managed to enter my car.
“They are NDC supporters and I strongly believe that it was the MP who mobilized the people to attack my campaign. The MP’s personal driver was there and they were wearing NDC shirt and also my driver heard them plotting the attack” he asserted.
The matter has since been reported to the regional police command and the victims are being treated at the Salaga hospital.
