Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North in the Northern Region, Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, has debunked claims by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that his administration has secured CAD125 million from the Canadian government to kick-start their flagship agriculture programme: “Planting for Food and Jobs.”
Contributing to the motion to thank the president on his State of the Nation address on the floor of the House, Hon. Suhuyini disclosed that the funds were secured by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration last year purposely for the development of the agriculture sector.
According to him, the CAD125 million was a budgetary support that has been coming from the Canadian government. He added that there are records to show that the Canadian First Secretary in charge of development paid a visit to the then agriculture minister and announced the facility and assured that the disbursement was going to start in March 2017.
He was not happy that the president did not give due credit to the immediate past NDC government for strides it made in securing the 125 million CAD for the agric sector.
The president in his address announced an amount of CAD125 million which has been secured from Canada to support the initiative.
“It would have hurt nothing if the president had acknowledged the contribution of the former administration,” the Tamale North MP lamented.
The Planting for Food and Jobs is expected to kick-start at a cost of GH¢560 million in March this year, ahead of the new farming season, according to the Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
He also told the House that the district assemblies would be tasked to identify and register progressive farmers in each of the 216 districts.
