There was a mad rush on the University of Ghana campus on Saturday evening when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Delali Akwesi Brempong provided a truck-load of sachet water for students.
The loaded truck was driven to the Mensah-Sarbah Hall where residents rushed take bags of water for themselves.
It is unclear the specific purpose for which he sent the ‘gift’, but it is believed the gesture was part of the candidate’s campaign strategy to win the students; most of whom are registered voters in the constituency to vote for him.
Delali Brempong is challenging the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko for the seat.
The Legon electoral area holds the highest number of registered voters in the constituency and has been tipped by many pollsters as an important area in determining the ultimate winner of the seat.
It may be a surprising turn of event for most political watchers as the incumbent MP, Emmanuel Agyarko deployed the same strategy; distributing free bags of water to students on the University’s campus.
Ahead of the December polls, Mr Agyarko, who is seeking reelection has been spotted many times visiting students in their rooms and on shuttles and sharing with them why they need to vote him to remain the Member of Parliament for the constituency.
