Central Regional Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Kwesi Dawood, has congratulated Ambassador Thomas Kwesi Quartey, for emerging victorious as the new Deputy Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.
Describing him as an excellent diplomat by all standards, Mr. Dawood stated that his victory will forever go down in history as the first and only Ghanaian to occupy an administrative office in the continental body.
The political communicator made this known in a press release issued to Today in Cape Coast in the Central Region yesterday.
According to him, Ambassador Quartey, who was the Secretary to former President John Dramani Mahama, will bring his experience and contributions towards the development of West Africa and the African continent to enable him deliver on his new mandate to help the AU and all stakeholders work towards the “Africa that we all want.”
He observed that Ambassador Quartey’s decision to contest the prestigious position in the AU did not surprise many because of his passion, competence and rich experience considering his background as a former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
“There is no doubt that his diplomatic career which spans a period of 35 years will enable him to deliver to make us even proud as Ghanaians,” he stated.
“He served in various capacities and in Ghana’s Embassies and High Commissions in Cotonou, Cairo, Brussels, Havana and London amongst others and we are hopeful the experiences he gathered in those places will be brought to bear positively at the AU Commission,” he added.
Mr. Dawood also commended former President Dramani Mahama and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Hanna Tetteh, as well as the former president’s team for working for the victory which, he said, has lifted the image of Ghana.
Ambassador Quartey was elected on Monday, January 31st, 2017 at the 28th Summit of Heads of State and Governments at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
His victory has been hailed all over the continent with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo describing it as great news for Ghana.
