PRESIDENT Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday held a closed-door meeting with the three former Presidents, their Excellencies, Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama, at the Flagstaff House, to discuss issues bordering on governance in the country
The purpose of the meeting was to seek their views on some governance-enhancing measures his administration intends to take, a statement from the Flagstaff House signed by the Acting Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said.
In his first inaugural speech on Saturday, January 7, 2017, President Akufo-Addo stated that “I am in the unique position of being able to draw on the wisdom and experience of three former Presidents of the Republic, their Excellencies Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama. They represent the continuity of the institutions of our Republic, for which we thank God.”
That same statement was reiterated in his message to Parliament on the State of the Nation, on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, where he noted that “I am in the enviable position of being the first Ghanaian leader to be able to draw on the experiences of three living former Presidents. This should, definitely, enrich my tenure of office.”
The meeting, which lasted for two hours, was held in a “good atmosphere, one of frank exchanges and mutual respect.”
It is the intention of President Akufo-Addo to have further meetings with the three former Presidents in the future,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, a cross-section of Ghanaians have commended the president for the initiative, describing it as “good democratic ingredient” which should be emulated by all future presidents.
A trader at Avenor, Maame Agyeiwaa, who spoke to Today, could not hide her admiration for President Akufo-Addo.
According to her, the meeting of the three former heads of state and the president was a sign of unity in the country.
“I’m proud to be a Ghanaian to see my former leaders and the current president sitting around one table discussing about the nation. Ghana is indeed blessed,” she said.
