Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has moved out of her shell, a day after being given approval to contest the December 7 presidential election.
Her campaign trail was Thursday spotted at the Dome market in Accra, wooing women to buy into her messages. Mrs. Rawlings, whose husband ruled Ghana for about 20 years, has had her baptism of fire to be on the ballot.
She is the National Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. Her first attempt was scuttled in 2012 by the Electoral Commission for errors on her nomination forms.
Similar errors nearly knocked her out of this year’s elections, but for the Supreme Court’s intervention.
She was cleared on November 9 to contest the 2016 elections after she was permitted to correct her errors. Hitherto, Mrs. Rawlings’ bid to become Ghana’s first female president on January 7, 2017 has been a bit too cold according to some observers.
She is urging the people to vote for change come December 7 as she makes her first stop at Dome to lurch into a full swing campaign. “She said during the tenure of her husband as President she was solidly behind him and she was much concerned about women empowerment.
So now that she is contesting the presidential race, her main focus is on women and children,” Onua FM’s Maxwell Otoo reports.
The National Democratic Party’s presidential candidate is on a regional tour in the Greater Accra.
Though she has faintly denied it, many still hold the conviction that she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP). This is a breakaway party from the National Democratic Congress (NDC),a party founded by the husband, Jerry John Rawlings.
