The 2016 Election Campaign Coordinator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has expressed surprise about the ‘noise’ in the media, following the popping-up of a coffin bearing posters of Nana Akufo-Addo, flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the NDC’s Manifesto launch in Sunyani.
Some young men in NDC T-shirts were seen carrying the coffin at the Sunyani Coronation Park parading it across the venue and were heard chanting songs against the NPP leader.
While some view the behavior of the youth as reprehensible especially when some persons in the ruling party, have attempted to use the health status of Nana Addo as a campaign tool, others are of the view that, it must be seen as mere politicking.
The office of the NPP Flagbearer has not taken lightly to the act, with his Spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid describing the conduct as reckless and unfortunate.
But speaking on Okay FM, Monday, Mr Kofi Adams stated that the NDC never made Akufo Addo its target at the Manifesto launch but was rather occupied with selling its transformational agenda to Ghanaians.
“Without condoning the act, I must say it is not new in our politics. This is done in both the NDC and NPP, even sometimes it happens in internal elections. I saw this same act being done in our recent primaries in one of the areas that I visited. The carrying of Akufo Addo’s coffin, was mere symbolism and wasn’t part of our programme. The media is always quick to bring such things onto the front burner. Our focus on the day was selling our transformational agenda to the public which will see the living conditions of Ghanaians including Akufo Addo being enhanced.”
