President Nana Addo commends Mahama for the way he conducted himself during the Bungalow controversy…
Newly elected President Nana Akufo-Addo, has hailed ex president John Mahama for his admirable conduct during the heat of the just ended Bungalow controversy. Nana Addo commends Mahama for his ability to maintain utmost decorum, despite massive criticisms hurled at him for requesting to keep government property, after losing an election.
President Nana Addo while speaking at a special thanksgiving service held at the Ridge Church on Sunday, took out time to acknowledge Mahama’s exemplary conduct. Speaking to the congregation, the delighted President said that:
Despite all the controversies surrounding his settlement, his conduct has been a credit to our nation and we must all give thanks to the Lord for it.
It was expected that Mahama would vacate his place of residence; Bungalow NO.3, Prestige Link, Cantonments, Accra, having lost to Nana Addo last year. The former president therefore came under intense criticisms after he requested to retain the official residence after losing December 2016 elections.

Mahama, through a letter signed by former Chief of staff, Julius Debrah, dated December 19th 2016, informed the new government that he wanted to keep the Presidential residence as his retirement home. The ex President also made a request for some adjoining properties to be given to him as his office. Mahama’s request however, created a public uproar, with many Ghanaians accusing him of blatantly trying to acquire more than what was approved for him by the state.
The ex President in a subsequent statement, had said his decision to maintain the state residence he occupied while in office, was approved by the new government led by Nana Akufo-Addo as well as Parliament. But Nana Addo’s transition team in a rebuttal, said the new government is yet to approve former President Mahama’s request to keep the property.
Owing to the escalating controversy, Mahama decided to choose peace over his cantonments residence, by withdrawing his request to keep the property. In a letter addressed to the new government a few days ago, the ex President said it was important to maintain the cordial relationship between the two transition sides.
President Nana Addo has therefore taken out time to compliment his predecessor Mahama, for choosing the side of peace. During the thanksgiving service, Nana Addo commends Mahama for the way he conducted himself during the heated controversy. He also hailed him for ensuring a peaceful election and transition process.
