Namibia has proposed a law that will ban foreigners from buying land in the country.
The Land Bill of 2016 is a combination of the Agricultural Commercial Land Reform Act of 1995 and the Communal Land Reform Act of 2002.
Under this proposed law, foreigners will not be allowed to buy or own land. They will also not be allowed to lease out land.
There are more than 12,000 farms in Namibia with a combined 40 million hectares.
In June, Minister of Lands Resettlement Utoni Nujoma said foreigners own 281 farms in Namibia with a combined 1.3 million hectares.
Nujoma, who tabled the bill in the National Assembly for the first time Thursday, also said then that much of this land is owned by absentee landlords. Enditem
