Disqualified presidential candidate for the Great Consolidation Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey, has claimed that his late father, Dan Lartey, saved former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings from being prosecuted over corruption related issues under the Kufuor administration.
Mr Lartey was reacting to an allegation by the ex-president that he (Lartey) had been contracted by some elements in the NDC to embarrass him at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative (CHRAJ).
Dr Henry Lartey recently dragged Mr Rawlings to CHRAJ and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following the latter’s admission that he indeed received a 2 million dollar gift from former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha in 1998.
Mr Rawlings subsequently accused Dr Lartey of being used by some elements in the ruling party to discredit him.
Addressing the press at the party’s headquarters Tuesday, Dr Lartey rejected the allegation and said he had nothing against the Rawlings’ and recalled that his late father saved the former first couple from being prosecuted for corruption. He, however, failed to mention the kind of help his late father extended to Mr Rawlings and his wife.
Dr Lartey challenged the former President to prove his innocence at CHRAJ instead of making baseless allegations.
“Rawlings shouldn’t hide behind some chiefs and say that he only took $2m from the then Nigerian President,” he charged.
