Molesting Alleged Female Thief: Arrest of 24 Is Encouraging…

LAST Monday we commented on the above subject where we charged the Police Service to ensure that all those who took part in molesting the alleged female thief in Kumasi were made to face the full width of the law.  Thankfully the Ashanti Regional Police Command has been swift in responding to the calls for those who engaged in that beastly mob-justice to be apprehended.

LAST Wednesday we learnt that the Ashanti Regional Police Command has made some arrests.   According to the Command, it has picked up some twenty-four (24) men suspected to be involved in that mob-justice, which incident happened at the Adum Central Market, Kumasi.

WE understand that they will be screened and those found to have been involved in the act will be processed to stand trial.  It is in the light of the arrest that Weekend Today seizes the opportunity to commend the police in Kumasi.

THE action of the Police sends the right signals that lawlessness will not be entertained in any form in this country.  Like we submitted in our Monday, February 20, 2017 comment we still hold the view that an example needs to be made of those who think it is normal to mete out instant justice to an alleged criminal.  And we urge that stiffer punishment be exacted on them to prevent the recurrence of mob-justice in our societies.

WE admit that it is painful and sometimes heartbreaking for a criminal to harm an innocent citizen.  But we can also not use that as a yardstick to be harming and killing criminals anytime the alarm bell sounds that a criminal has been caught, particularly by civilians.  What it means when we do that is to be telling the world that there are no laws in the country.

IT is imperative that the Police Service continues with its education on the fact that instant justice is not lawful.  Weekend Today believes that when this is done in a vigorous and sustained manner the message will sink deeper in our societies and will make people conscious of the fact that instant justice is wrong and an offence that can land a person in jail.
