President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint some 110 Ministers including deputies and regional ministers, has generated mixed reactions among Ghanaians who are mostly outraged by the move.
The President on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 named 54 persons to serve as Ministers of State at the presidency/ministries, and deputy ministers in his government, bringing to 110, the number of ministers who will be serving under his administration.
This is the highest number of appointees any government has had since the Fourth Republic.
Some Ghanaians who could not hide their frustration about the move expressed their concerns, suggesting that the President in most cases was rewarding party loyalty by giving out positions, instead of having in mind the larger national interest.
For instance, in Cape Coast in the Central Region, our reporter Magdalene Abrobrah reported that ,a cross- section of the people within the Cape Coast Metropolis were peeved with Akufo-Addo’s size of government.
Also in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, James Appiakorang Jnr, reported that many people perceived to be members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were not happy with the size of the President’s government.
They did not understand why the President should make his government huge when the same person during the 2016 electioneering campaign promised to cut down government’s expenditure.
However the reaction that greeted the appointment of the so many deputy ministers was different in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Our correspondent, Michael Mfum Sarpong reported that many people in Sunyani were optimistic that, the people appointed by the President will “ definitely justify the confidence reposed in them”.
Many people who spoke to Today according to our reporter were of the view that it “doesn’t matter the size, but we should be concerned about the quality of people who have been appointed by President Akufo-Addo.
In Tamale in the Northern Region, our reporter Hamza Mohammed said, the announcement of over 50 ministers by the President was received with mixed reactions.
According to him, while some people saw it as a way of rewarding party loyalists, others said it was to help solve the numerous economic challenges facing the country.
Meanwhile the international media have expressed surprise at the size of President Akufo-Addo’s size of government.
