Following the announcement by National Executive Council of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, of 15 % increase in transport fares, drivers in the capital city yesterday began charging the new fares as was directed.
Although only few people were not aware of the new development, a large number of passengers said the new fares were reasonable.
In an interview with Weekend Today, Secretary to Madina Old Road Drivers Association at the Tema Station, Mr. Shehu Ibrahim said the increment took effect under the directive of GPRTU.
According to him, station managers were directed to wait until they had received notification before effecting the change
“so there are some stations like the Aflao, Akatsi and Abor that are still charging the old fares”, he said.
At Kaneshie station, Weekend Today observed that there were some inconsistencies in the charges.
While some drivers had increased the fare by 15%, others increased it between 17.5% and 20%.
Secretary to the Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tarkwa and Bogoso transport station Mr. A. D Acheampong explained that, the old fare from Accra to Cape Coast was Gh¢16.00 but “currently it stands at Gh¢180, Accra to Tarkwa was Gh¢26.00 now is Gh¢30.00, Accra-Bogoso has also moved from Gh¢30.00 to Gh¢ 35.00”.
Some of the passengers interviewed claimed they were not aware of the increment hence were surprised to see the new fares.
