Africa World Airline flight 167 scheduled from Tamale to Accra was delayed over an hour due to the lateness of four Ministers of State.
The minister who comprise Salifu Saeed who is Northern Regional Minister, Ms. Otiko Afisa Djaba- Gender, Children and Social Protection minister, Hon. Ambrose Dery-Interior and Defence minister, Dominic Ntiwul.
The ministers, journalists and some security personnel arrived at the Tamale Airport on a military helicopter from Bimbilla allegedly working on the security situation in that area which has reportedly left more than a dozen dead.
The Defence Minister, however, apologised to passengers before take-off.
While the passengers were aboard the flight and it was airborne , the pilot announced that smoke had been detected in the cabin hence return of the flight to Tamale Airport.
Some of the passengers expressed outrage at the delay of the flight and described the instance as unacceptable since it was a commercial flight and that public officers do not have the right to request delay to enable them embark while performing their civic duty.
According to the passengers, management and technical engineers at AWA told them that a plane will be brought from Accra to convey the passengers at 10:30pm to the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
