CENTRAL Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, has revealed that he will institute an award scheme to motivate teachers and pupils excel in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to him, it was appalling to see Cape Coasters and indigenes of the region denied the opportunity to attend the finest schools in the region due to poor performance, hence the move to ensure that the region fully benefits from the 30% quota system.
The regional minister made this known in Cape Coast during his first media interaction since his appointment as regional minister last Monday.
He explained that the award scheme will be introduced amongst schools and teachers in various districts in the region to serve as a healthy competition to raise the falling standard of education in the region.
The vociferous minister’s initiative follows the poor performance of pupils in the region which has denied a lot of them the opportunity of attending senior high schools in the region, even though the region boasts of most of the finest in the country.
He lamented that out of the 45,000 students who sat for the BECE last year; only 300 scored aggregate six for the entire region with as many as 13 thousand being successful beyond aggregate 36.
He added that about 35,000 scored between aggregate six and 36, adding that it shows that primary and Junior High School education in the region was nothing to write home about, hence the initiative.
