The new Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi whose appointment by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took effect from March 1, 2017 is a product of the University of Ghana, Legon and the Ghana School of Law where he obtained his LLB Honours Degree and his Bachelor of Laws respectively.
He was appointed Notary Public in 2007 by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice Mrs. G. T Wood.
He also holds an M.A. in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA as well as Certificates in International Migration Law and Conflict Transformation.
Before joining Ghana Immigration Service as a Lawyer in 1998, he worked with ABRAHAM OSSEI AIDOOH & CO. CHAMBERS in Tema as well as the Legal Department of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority from 1992 to 1998.
He was very instrumental in the drafting of The Immigration Act 2000, Act 573; Immigration Regulations, 2001, L.I 1691; Citizenship Act, 2000, Act 591; Citizenship Regulations, 2001, LI 1690; Immigration(Amendment) Act, 2012, Act 848 among others.
Having worked with the Service for 19 years, he comes to the position with a wealth of experience gained from working closely with four former Directors of Immigration.
With over 20years experience as a lawyer, Mr Kwame Takyi has always displayed his immense ability to effectively manage a lot of responsibilities concurrently, a trait which highlights his time management skills.
As Acting Head of the Legal Department, he also held the following positions; National Secretary- Old Valdals Association of Commonwealth Hall from 2003 to 2014.
It is worth noting that, whilst at Legon, he was resident in the great Commonwealth Hall and therefore a blue blooded Vandal. He was Chairman of the Border Patrol Concept Development and Implementation team of GIS; Secretary to the GIS Board from 2003 to 2005; Member of the Central Disciplinary Committee of the GIS from 2002 to 2013; Chairman, Strategic Plan Implementation Committee from 2011 to 2014; One of the Directors of the National Identification Authority Board as GIS representative.
Being a sports enthusiast, he was appointed as a Management Member of Accra Great Olympics Football Club from 1999 to 2004 and is currently the Secretary to the Board of Directors of Great Olympics. He became the Vice Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the GFA from 2006 to 2014 and presently a member of the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association and a former member of the GFA’s Legal Committee.
He is a member of the Ghana Bar and International Bar Associations.
