Memories are fresh. I miss Pope. He was a good chap. Although it would not approach visitors who entered our house, he often barked. Weak sound. Powerless. It hurt that Pope couldn’t provide any formidable protection for the household.
Same applies to a leadership that’s weak. A weak leader is a bad general. A failed field marshal. A whiner. His delight is in wine. He often let out smoke by opening a cigarette box. His memory goes with the wind. He will find himself in a distant land.
It was 15 years ago and the memory is still fresh like the defeat handed former President John Mahama. Then President. All powerful! anyone who stood against him was shoved aside. However, sacrosanct your views, they were not needed in his government. Media. NDC supporters. Opposition. Who? Nothing counted. But some people counted in his scheme of things.
He had good cleaners who would stop at nothing to sweep outside discordant views. They were formidable and powerful. Effective. Mahama saw the folly or otherwise of his followers at the whims of the cleaners. They were the gatekeepers. No one went past the master’s gate without first getting clearance from the cleaners. Their voices held the melodies. Often sweet. But generally a bitter one. Their voices sounded like a lullaby to the king. But his opponents said the king was naked although he often had on a regalia likened to a kidney.
But after December 7, 2016, history was made. It was the first time an incumbent President was dealt a terrible blow in a presidential poll. The secret the cleaners had shielded from the broom was swept outside. Everything was naked. Nothing is hidden any longer!
Then governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) walked itself – amidst chanting of hate songs – into opposition accompanied by its general. Over three million soldiers many disillusioned, hungry, and thirsty had what they thought was a bright future blighted. A mere GHC5 could have soothed many of their wounds.
As Mahama walked into opposition, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo walked in. His childhood dream of leading the nation has come true. He didn’t win the December 7 election as has been widely acclaimed. I have maintained the margin of the President’s victory showed the former President lost votes in NDC world, Volta Region.
Mahama allowed himself to be humiliated at the polls. He believed in lies told to him by many. He believed he was winning. He believed the cleaners, despite contrary sounds from the stomachs of NDC supporters. Sounds accentuated by hunger, vain toil, wicked tears, and cursed pain.
Suddenly, there are calls for him to comeback. Posters for Mahama 2020 have reportedly been sighted in some parts of the country and on social media platforms. Some people are saying they’re the ones behind the comeback deal. As far as I know they’ve convinced themselves only. Their family members. Perhaps Mahama too.
The truth is that the former President is behind this comeback deal. But no deal is as good as a bad deal. No deal.
It’s a stinking deal. A failed plot that will mar the beauty of the story. Ghana’s story. Mahama’s four years was one of the sub-plots of Ghana’s history, yet the most abused of all the plots.
The political history of Mahama is replete with a man who has not stood by any hard decision in his life. What did he achieve as a
Member of Parliament (MP)? What was his achievement as Vice President? What were his achievements as President of Ghana that he wants people like Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Alhassan Suhuyini and Mahama Ayariga to protect for him?
GYEEDA, SADA, Ford Expedition, alleged disingenuous attempt bribery of governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Daniel Bugri Naabu, the ill-decision of pardoning Montie 3 which amounted to a needless interference with the work of the judiciary.
What is his track record? Corruption? Mediocre decisions? A man who has no opinion of his own? A man who fears criticism? What scar does he have for fighting for Ghana’s democracy? Since when did we begin to applaud people whose past time is a hide and seek politics?
