Former President Mahama has been named among the 2016 African Leadership Persons of the Year, having won ALM’s African Political Leader of the Year Award.
Immediate past Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama will today, Thursday, 23rd February, 2017 be awarded an African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Award in an International Summit on Public Accountability and Transparency in Johannesburg, South Africa. The former president is already in South Africa for the summit which will last from 23rd -24th of February.
Mahama who will receive the 2016 African Political Leader of the Year Award is being honoured for his contributions towards deepening and enriching Ghana’s democracy and his high ranking status as one of Africa’s best leaders.

The Chairman of the International Advisory board of the ALM Awards, Ambassador Joe Beasley, appraised the former President saying, “it is gratifying to know that Africa still has leaders like you bestriding the political space.”
Ambassador Joe Beasley commended Mahama for respecting the wishes of Ghanaians in the last election despite all the significant contributions he has made towards the country’s economic growth and development; especially the initiation and completion of several major projects. He said that Africa has found in leaders like Mahama, “the perfect Apostles of Good Governance and Democracy, who would help in spreading the gospel to the rest of the continent”.
Former president Mahama is expected to deliver a keynote speech on the theme, “How can Africa win the progress race?” at the ALM Awards ceremony. Mr. Mahama will also be presented with the Georgia Congressional Commendation from the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus at the event.
A special edition of the African Leadership Magazine will also be unveiled at the occasion. The ceremony is scheduled to kick off at 6: 00 pm today at the Southern Sun Hotel, South Africa.
This year’s awards summit will be attended by heads of states and public institutions, governors, ministers, business leaders and entrepreneurs, among others. Below are some of the confirmed guests to be present at the event.

* Her Excellency, Bongi Ngema-Zuma, First lady, Republic of South Africa
* His Excellency, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, immediate past governor, Kano State, Nigeria and Senator of the Federal Republic.
The African Leadership Persons of the Year is an annual award organised by the African Leadership Magazine and reserved for selected Africans who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavor.
The African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards aims at presenting the positive sides of the African continent, which is hardly showcased on the global stage. It also celebrates exemplary leadership and individuals who have contributed to shaping the global perception of the African continent.
Normally, a shortlist of nominees are selected from a survey conducted via the ALM’s online and offline platforms, and then forwarded to the selection committee and the editorial board for final consideration, selection, and approval. An outstanding characteristic of the nominees has always been their unwavering commitment to the Africa project. These Africans are considered to have blazed the trail in the year under review.
