Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is appealing to government to grant former President John Mahama’s request to keep his official bungalow.
According to him, the former president is entitled to a house as part of his end of service benefit thus will support any decision to allow him stay in his official residence as he so wishes.
Sir John as he is popularly called made the comment following the request of Mr. Mahama to be allowed to say in his official bungalow.
A December 19, 2016 letter signed by the former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said John Mahama would like the incoming administration to give him the “No 3, Prestige Link, Cantonment together with the adjoining facilities as his official retirement home.”
By law, the country is expected to house its ex-presidents but it does not allow the ex-president to stay in the house he occupied before handing over. This request has made many critics angry some of whom have cited the law and previous national events as their defence.
However, it has emerged that President Akufo-Addo has granted the request in flagrant violation of the country’s laws.
But Sir John said, though the decision is unpopular, it is in the interest of the state.
