Former President John Dramani Mahama has together with the National Democratic Congress donated GHC 50,000 and 150 bags of cement to the Overlord of Mamprugu Traditional Area, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Sheriga.
The donation was made on the former president’s behalf and that of the party at the palace of the Overlord in Nalerigu in the Northern region, by the former regional minister Abdallah Abubakar. The former minister had led a delegation of former ministers to empathize with the overlord following a fire that gutted portions of his palace on April 1, 2017.
Mr Abdallah Abubakar in his speech revealed the National Democratic Congress will always remain faithful to the Nayiri for his wise council, explaining the decision by Mr. Mahama to send a delegation to show concern.
According to Mr Abdallah, Mr Mahama who was out of the country at the time of the incident has not been at peace knowing the residence of “our father” has been burnt.
“The former president, your son couldn’t sleep after he heard what has befallen you, he was away but once he arrived he sent us to present these items to you and to inform you that he is on his way himself”.
The regional chairman of NDC Chief Sofo Azorka; former Road and Transport Minister Alhaji Inusah Fuseini; former Agricultural Minister Alhaji Mohammed Lemuna; representatives from the palace of the Chief of Gukpegu in Tamale, accompanied by some constituency executives of the party were taken round the burnt rooms by a sub chief of Mamprugu Nba Tarana.
He revealed that the fire began from a faulty air conditioner in the bedroom of the overlord around 10:30pm on April 1. No casualties were recorded thanks to officers of the Ghana National Fire Service who responded swiftly to the fire, Nba Tarana added.
However, some personal property of the overlord were burnt to ashes. Meanwhile, renovation work to give the palace a facelift had began at the time of the visit.
