President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a farmer service center at Gaani in the Kassena Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region.
President Mahama said the farmer service center, which is a Public Private Partnership project when completed, will support farmers with farmer interventions to increase productivity and increase food security.
Citing the project as the solution to a green revolution in Ghana, President Mahama said, “in the next ten years when these centers are set up, Ghana will become self-sufficient in food production in terms of food security and become a net exporters of food to other countries”
He said the facility will be stocked with 10 tractors to provide services to registered members and input units where subsidized fertilizers, seedlings and all other inputs needed by farmers to farm.
President Mahama, who cut sod for the construction of the facility during a 3-day campaign tour in the Upper East Region, urged interested farmers to get registered when the facility is completed to rip its full benefits.
Explaining the composition of the facility, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Limuna Muniru, said the facility will provide financial support to farmers for farming, and social support by the Agricultural Development Bank under the micro credit unit and pay back later.
The facility will also provide advisory services for farmers, and a unit for training farmers by equipping the knowledge of farmers on modern technology and best agricultural practices to increase productivity.
Mr. Limuna underscored that the pay-back unit will have a warehouse to support farmers decide when to sell their farm produce.
President Mahama stated that, the Navrongo-Naaga road, has been awarded, and the contractor will mobilize to commence work.
He hinted that, the Bolga-Naaga road and the Walewale-Naaga roads, will also be considered for construction in due course.
Mr. Mahama added that, government has approved a Chinese loan facility for the extension of electricity under the rural electrification project to all the remaining communities without electricity.
