The Member of Parliament Mpohor constituency, Hon. Alex Agyekum has described Bawku Central MPs action after he was asked by the Joe Ghartey led committee that investigated the bribery scandal as dishonourable.
43936818, who made the bribery claims was found guilty of contempt of Parliament, and was asked to offer an unqualified apology to purge himself of contempt.
Before this apology, he said the committee’s recommendations were problematic, especially when it failed to conduct due diligence by cross examining the “other sides” to arrive at a fair conclusion.
He also questioned the powers of the committee to find him guilty of contempt. “If you conclude that you want to use the criminal standards then you might as well have during the proceedings, used the criminal process, which is cross examining the other sides so that you can come to the conclusion that will enable you to exact criminal functions but you did not do that,” he queried.
But the Mpohor MP in his personal view said: the MP erred on the position he took after he was asked to apologise.
Mahama Ayariga indicted three people namely; Boakye Agyarko, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed and Joe Osei Owusu but you were not there but heard that Boakye Agyarko paid a bribe.
What is the locus indicting these three individuals? A committee was later constituted, you were invited but you were unable to prove and so, you were asked to apologise to purge yourself of contempt and instead of doing so, you rather made claims that the process was problematic.
Who were you expecting to be invited so you [Ayariga] cross exam? What will you be proving with the witnesses? The MP said, although the Speaker is yet to rule on the matter, ‘’in my personal opinion, Mahama Ayariga has indicted the whole Parliament; he has indicted his personality as a Member of Parliament and the people he represents.
Aside that, he has tainted Islam because he swore by the Quran when he made the allegation and Muntaka Mubarak also swore by the Quran. So between the two of you, you failed to honour your religion as Muslims.’’
