Authorities have arrested a 35-year-old woman who attempted to smuggle large quantities of marijuana in cans of fish to a prisoner at Ghana’s Ankaful Maximum Security Prison in the Central Region.
She daringly concealed the marijuana, popularly known as ‘wee’, in 15 cans, which she was delivering to one of the prison inmates, Victor Owusu – a robbery convict currently serving 110 years jail-term.
The woman, Memuna Mahama, has by a court order, been placed under Police remand at the Elmina Police station, which is investigating the case.
Per the Ankaful Prison records, though Menuna was visiting the prison for the second time, her first was to another inmate, authorities have said.
Meanwhile Owusu told the Prison authorities that he doesn’t know the woman, but the Central Regional Prisons Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Machator, told 3News Friday that Owusu’s disclaimer could be because Memuna has been arrested.
“I can confirm the story. The incident happened Wednesday around 5:00 p.m.,” ASP Machator, told 3News.
He said Memuna arrived at the Ankaful Prison with some assorted provisions to be delivered to Owusu, and as is the rule, the prison wardens on duty inspected the items, which he said, included 20 tins of fish.
“The officers decided to do a random search of the fish; they picked three. When they opened the first one they realized it contained some compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in the tin with some sandy soil put around them,” ASP Machator revealed.
“They were factory sealed. Some of them were easy-open. The officers decided to open the rest and out of the 20 [cans] she brought, 15 contained the compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp,” he added.
The woman, according to ASP Machator, claimed the items were given to her by someone in Kumasi to deliver to the inmate and thus had no fore knowledge whatsoever, of the content.
ASP Machator told 3News the Elmina Police was immediately invited to arrest the woman, saying, “we invited the Elmina Police and today [Friday] she was put before court. She’s been remanded to Police custody.
