Minster for Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Asiamah has pleaded with the general public to rally behind three of Ghanaian contenders in tomorrow’s boxing bouts at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
The bout which has been dubbed the “Rumble at 60” will feature three of the nation’s finest boxers who will defend their titles against their foreign opponents as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of Ghana’s independence.
Interacting with the media during a courtesy call at his office in Accra, Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua constituency Hon. Asiamah acknowledged the massive impact boxing has played in the sports development of the country.
He however lamented the lack of funds for the perceived lesser known sports.
Discounting claims that boxing is a lesser known sport, Hon Asiamah argued that no sport can override the successes and achievement boxing has chalked for the nation as compared to football.
He lauded the triumphs of the forbearers in the sport and called for support for the younger generation.
“Be rest assured that we are going to resolve some of the challenges that confront all the sporting disciplines. The problems we face as a nation is the lack of investment and funding that result in low morale of our sports men and women but we are very optimistic we will things will change”, he assured.
He bemoaned Ghana’s inability to win medals in the last two decades and pledged to revive those moments again with laudable policies by the Ministry.
The legislator announced that an amendment to the sports Act to include a dedicated fund for sports development will soon be put forward before parliament.
Three World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Belts are for grabs for Ghana’s world hopefuls; Richard Commey, Duke Micah and Freddy Lawson.
In the supporting national championship bouts Emanuel Anim faces George Bamson, Felix Ajom takes on Richard Amanful, Ben Ankrah (Congo Soldier) versus Kpakpo Allotey, Jacob Dickson versus Ofei Dodoo and Isaac Aryee against Kofi Manu.
On his part, Manager of US based boxer, Fred Lawson said, the Night is an opportunity to celebrate Ghana boxing as part of the 60th Independence Anniversary and expressed his gratitude to the government and Ghana ‘60 Years On’ Secretariat for supporting the event.
