LAWYER Raymond Kakraba Quarshie, has called for ceasefire among feuding factions in the Nawuri State in the Kpandai District of the Northern Region.
According to the lawyer, the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in the Nawuri State was adversely stalling socio-economic development and growth as well threatening peace in the area.
Addressing chiefs, elders and assembly members at a crunch meeting held at Kakraba Quarshie House at Dansoman in the Greater Accra Region last Sunday, March 19, 2017 Lawyer Quarshie expressed fears that the disagreements might negatively affect the Nawuri state and made a passionate appeal to both feuding factions to cease fire.
The meeting discussed other issues including the unresolved Nawuri paramouncy, the age-long disputes between Challa-Bogon of Mbowura and Joadigbe as well inter and intra community disputes among the people of Nawuri.
Shortly after the meeting Lawyer Quarshie expressed worry over the unresolved disputes in the area.
He told Today that although several measures had been initiated to avert the alarming situation which had resulted to loss of lives and properties some of the people were still not ready to smoke peace pipe.
“Since 1991 after the Nawuri Gonja conflict there has never been peace among the Nawuri themselves so the Nawuri Traditional Council consulted me (Lawyer Kakraba Quarshie) to try so that we can smoke peace pipe,” he said.
According to him, the first time he summoned the meeting on February 20, 2017, some chiefs of Nawuri refused to attend.
“I am also surprised when I invited those chiefs again for another meeting Sunday March 19 2017, these chiefs refused to attend,” Lawyer Quarshie said, and expressed his disquiet about the attitude of the chiefs
“As I speak to you now I am not happy with Nawuri Chiefs’ refusal to attend the meeting,” he fumed.
He further urged both parties to bury their differences and work towards peace in the area.
For his part, Nawuri Disane-Wura, Nana Oklas Nkpanibake II urged his people to be agents of unity and reconciliation.
He called on the chiefs who absented themselves from the meeting to smoke peace pipe.
“We need peace to prevail among us, and we need development in our district.”
