Ghanaian hiplife musician, Emmanuel Botwe, popularly known as Kwaw Kese did the unthinkable on the night of Saturday, 8th April, 2017 at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (2017 VGMA) held at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The Abodam hit-maker who has previously won several Vodafone Ghana Music Awards shocked everyone when he appeared on the red carpet bearing in a worn-out wheel barrow, all his past VGMAs with the notice “AWARDS FOR SALE” written on a wooden board sticking over them.
Among the many awards the ‘Man Insane’ put up for sale were his Artiste of the Year, Hiplife Album of the Year, Hip life Artiste of the Year, Hiplife Song of the Year (2008) and Hip hop Song of the Year (2012) awards.
Well, the few persons who had gotten wind of the musician’s recent comments on various media platforms about the VGMAs were not so shocked like the rest, as those comments threw a little light on his latest action – although nobody speculated that it has come to that.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Kwaw Kese expressed lack of interest in the VGMAs, saying that he was not going to submit his songs for nominations and subsequent awards in the 2017 VGMA. He explained that the Ghana Music Awards do not put money in your pocket except you work your way to the top. He had then made it clear that what matters to him at the present is the money with which to take care of his family and pay his child’s fees.
I have forgotten about VGMA. I am not submitting any music for an award. Sometimes you submit the work and the results don’t come out good. I am thinking about making lots of money to take care of my family and brand, he stated.
…If VGMA gives you the recognition and you don’t work your way to the top, you will not make money…if you don’t work yourself up, forget it. I’m all about money now so I can pay the fees of my kid,” he added.
These assertions seem to substantiate recent rumours circulating on some media platforms that the hip hop artiste is broke and is currently squatting at a friend’s place with his family. It is true that Kese’s action at this year’s VGMA could be best described as crazy, it still points to the current size of his pocket, as well as his level of frustration at the moment.
Moreover, Kese’s behavior on Saturday night could also be linked to scandals that surfaced last year regarding bribing allegations. The musician had supported claims that Charterhouse, the event management company who organize the VGMAs were taking bribes from certain artists in return for nominations.
Kwaw Kese got married to Doris Kyei Baffour in April, 2016. The marriage has produced a baby girl. He also has a grown up daughter from another woman.
